The Decline of Urban Pollinators

Philadelphia’s dense urban growth has left pollinators struggling to find food and shelter. Heat-absorbing pavement, pesticides, and loss of green space have fractured the delicate web that sustains the city’s biodiversity. Without these pollinators, local ecosystems and food sources begin to collapse. Novelect partners with neighborhoods, schools, and youth programs to reverse this decline by reintroducing native plants and restoring natural balance within the city’s built environment.

Our Approach

Novelect’s Pocket Gardens for Pollinators brings ecology to the street level. Our teams identify underused public spaces, vacant lots, and schoolyards, then work with local volunteers to plant native species that attract bees and butterflies. Each garden is small but intentional and built with soil-friendly layering and pollinator-safe blooms. We provide workshops on native gardening, maintain plant health through student programs, and track returning pollinators. These micro-habitats help to reconnect fragmented ecosystems and transform urban space.
